He was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in 1945, in the class of Professor Ivan Tabaković.For the sake of further artistic development, together with Kosara Bokšan (future wife), and six other colleagues, he goes to Zadar, where he lives, works and creates in the abandoned Governor’s Palace. Today, that group is called the “Zadar Group”. Returning to Belgrade in 1951, he became one of the founders of the group “Jedanaestorica”. The following year, he went to live in Paris with Kosa Bokshan, and later, in 1957, he built a studio in the suburbs of Paris (Gentilly), where he lived for the rest of his life.
Omčikus received the Grand Prix at the 9th International Exhibition of Original Drawings in Rijeka in 1984. The first serious retrospective was organized for him in 1989 at the MSU in Belgrade, on the basis of which, a year later, in 1990, he received the traditional award for painting from the newspaper Politika. He also won the prize of the October Salon in Belgrade for painting in 1972, then the first prize at the IV Yugoslav Portrait Exhibition in Tuzla in 1979, and the first prize for drawing at the 2nd Interbifep in Tuzla in 1982. He was a corresponding member of SANU.
